This is a late production/assembled Model 1903 bolt action rifle manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal. This rifle was manufactured right towards the end of the normal RIA production of 1903 rifles and has a mix of Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal parts. It has the standard five line RIA receiver markings over serial number '298649'; and the barrel is marked 'RIA/Ordnance Shell and flame/7-18' The underside of the barrel is stamped with heat lot 'C109'. Rock Island and Springfield had similar numbers from 1 to 430,742 - i.e. You could have a RIA and Springfield M1903 both with the same serial number up to that higher number. There were no 'double numbers' for those RIA receivers which were processed at Springfield which came without serial numbers but marked 'Rock Island Armory'. These were used on the M1903 Modified, M1903a3, and M1903a4. Remington used at least 3 different Ordnance Wheels. 'RA' was stamped on the stocks after Smith-Corona began production of.
