I believe there is a rort in the repair industry that luckily the internet may help you avoid.
As an example, before the internet I contacted Canon with a video camera where video was now only being recorded in black and white. Another family member's identical video camera did the same a few months earlier. Given two identical video cameras behaving the same, I have no doubt it should have been easy to let me know what the most likely problem was and an estimate in cost. That way I could quickly make a good decision on how I should proceed. That was decades ago and companies are still doing the same.
A home based client of mine called Brother because their MFC990CW was displaying the error Unable to print 4F. They were given two numbers and told to contact the companies for service. One company told them it would cost $60 to look at the printer. They called another company who told them it wasn't worth fixing and they could get a new J470 for $149. The first company would know the most likely reason for the issue but by not providing any guidance (which to me Brother should provide) they may get the person to come in and spend $60. This same technique has been going on in the repair industry for decades.
The second company most likely provided good advice and a suitable model number, but being a service centre their prices are unlikely to be competitive.
